HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, T.-N. L. | The mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, was in critical condition Sunday after being struck in the head by a projectile from a firearm.

In a brief news release, the city stated that the mayor John Hickey had been reached during a hunting accident Saturday afternoon. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the mayor Hickey and his family,” added the deputy mayor Wally Andersen, without offering more details.

According to “The Labradorian”, the mayor Hickey had gone alone to inspect the traps in the forest when he was struck under the chin by his own gun. The reason why the shot went off, however, remains unclear.

Despite his serious injuries, Mr. Hickey has managed to reach a road, where he was able to sign to someone to get help.

The mayor was still in a critical condition, but stable, in a hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sunday.
