The Front of popular action in urban redevelopment (FRAPRU) will organize a march of 500 miles, between Quebec and Ottawa in order to claim a greater respect for the right to housing.
After the organization of the defence of the rights of tenants, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, this is the most ambitious project of its history.
Under the theme “in cities and villages for the right to housing”, the operation of the FRAPRU will begin on 2 September in Ottawa and will end on 29 September in Quebec city. Thirty organizations canadian social and grouping of montrealers support the approach.
The FRAPRU wants to squeeze the instances the provincial and federal government to act to improve access to housing for low-income households.
In a statement released Sunday, the organization denounces “the serious denials of the right to housing” of which these households are victims and “the lack of investments in the field of social housing, in spite of the requests supported made for several years.”
According to the census of 2016, 195 635 tenant households in the province spend more than half their income for housing.
“If we continue at the current pace, it will take over 65 years to meet these needs,” said Véronique Laflamme, spokesman for the FRAPRU, in this press release. However, the proportion of social housing is decreasing in the stock of rental housing in canada and québec.”
“Governments must ensure that fundamental rights are respected; when they don’t, the entire society must be mobilised”, said Christian Nadeau, president of the League of rights and freedoms.
