A motorist of 41 years and her daughter 19 years of age were fighting for their lives Saturday night after being involved in an accident on highway 50 to the west, in Gatineau.

The accident occurred shortly after 16 h during an overtaking manoeuvre “legal,” said Daniel Thibaudeau, spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec. “The vehicle of the two women came into contact with the one they came to overtake when the driver tried to re-enter the right lane,” said the spokesperson.

The driver of the vehicle performing the overtaking manoeuvre lost control of his steering wheel and barrels followed. In the lurch, the two women were ejected.

The two occupants of the vehicle that was the subject of the overflow have undergone only minor injuries, according to the SQ.

Highway 50 was still closed to traffic in the westbound direction at kilometre 147 to 21 h in order to allow the investigators to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
