Budget Morneau: more than $ 500 million for cyber security

    OTTAWA – The federal government plans to create two new entities responsible for cyber security in Canada within the framework of an investment of more than $ 500 million over five years.

    The budget 2018 forecasts 507.7 million $ in 2023, and $ 108 million per year thereafter, to develop a national cyber security strategy.

    “Cyber attacks are becoming more pervasive, sophisticated and effective. Cyber attacks successful may make the private information of the Canadian public, cost millions of dollars to canadian businesses and threaten critical infrastructure networks”, one can read in the budget tabled on Tuesday.

    The investment provides for the creation of a new canadian centre for cyber security, to protect the personal information of Canadians. The centre would bring together all the expertise of a federal matter and would report to the Center of the communications security establishment of Canada.

    Ottawa wants to spend $ 155 million over five years and $ 44.5 million per year thereafter.

    The royal Canadian mounted police, she will co-ordinate all the investigation of cybercrime in the country. The police force will receive $ 116 million in 2023, and 23.2 million, respectively, for the following years, in order to establish a national Unit for the coordination of the fight against cybercrime.

    The entity will also be responsible to deploy a new mechanism for reporting public cases of cyber-crime.

    Us $ 236.5 million $ over five years, and $ 41.2 million for the subsequent years, will be used globally to improve the security of digital infrastructure in canada.
