A majority of Canadians disapproved of the way in which the government manages the reception of applicants for asylum who have gone through thousands of the border in an irregular manner since the beginning of the summer.

An Angus Reid survey released Friday also indicates that more than half (53 %) of the population found the country “too generous” towards those who are supporters go into exile, preferring that resources are rather used for the protection of the canadian border.

An equivalent share of respondents (54%) criticize Justin Trudeau for his contradictory messages. In a famous tweet issued at the time of hosting the syrian refugees in the beginning of the year, the prime minister was invited to Canada ” those who flee from persecution “, while his government is now trying to discourage illegal crossings.

The federal minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, has responded to these survey results unflattering.

“We are a country that has always focused on values of openness and compassion. It is up to us to reassure […] we will continue to communicate the work that we do, and when we have completed this work, the majority of Canadians are of the opinion that we do the right thing “, he launched, on Friday, at the output of the third federal-provincial meeting on the subject of irregular migration.

    Applications heard

The governments of Quebec and Canada are commended for their good management of the folder since this summer.

“All our requests have been heard, and the decisions that the federal government has taken to help us in the [exemption] of public services “, has applauded the minister Weil.

The minister Garneau and his colleague, the quebec minister of Immigration, Kathleen Weil, announced that access to a work permit and health care for asylum seekers will be accelerated, in particular by the opening of a new service point at the Guy-Favreau Complex in Montreal.

Since the beginning of the month of June, at least 8,000 migrants have entered irregularly the country, mainly in Quebec, hoping to flee anti-immigration policies of Donald Trump. The arrival flows, however, has decreased a lot this week.
