While the legalization of cannabis should enter into force this summer in Canada, the border services americans have warned travellers not to attempt to enter the United States with their personal consumption.

“Although marijuana has been decriminalized to varying degrees in some american States, it remains illegal at the federal level. Therefore, the sale, possession, production, and distribution remain illegal,” said the Global network a spokesman for the customs Service and border protection, Jason Givens.

This last reminds us that crossing the border, Canadians find themselves under the jurisdiction of u.s. federal, and that they will therefore still be arrested or fined if they are in possession of cannabis.

Under a tolerance policy put in place during the Obama era, of american States such as Colorado, Oregon or California, since the 1st January last, were able to legalize the sale of cannabis for recreational use unmolested by the federal government.

The department of justice announced Thursday that it would put an end to this approach, leaving now to federal prosecutors the freedom to challenge the practices of States.

In Canada, the liberal government promises to legalize cannabis by July 2018. Adopted by the House of commons last November, bill C-45 has yet to be approved by the Senate before entering into force.
