Early Wednesday morning, a minivan fell into the Grand river, near Grand Valley, a few tens of kilometres north-west of Toronto. The driver wanted to exit her vehicle with her three year old son, but the latter has, however, escaped, and was washed away, said the Ontario provincial police (OPP).

Since then, searches have been undertaken along the river and in the water, but the child had not been found.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the police Paul Nancekivell told Global News that helicopters searched the coast of the County of Dufferin, while dive teams searched the river. A canine unit was also on site.

The mother’s tears had been transported to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia, on Wednesday. Since then, she’s back at it.

“She is distraught, as you can understand, this is a horrific tragedy, said a spokesman for the OPP. She has a lot of support from his family. We try to ensure that it is updated before any other person of any development in the case,” stressed the spokesman.

More than 100 members of the community are also involved in the search operation.
