MONTREAL | Héma-Québec has taken advantage of the celebrations of the Month of Black history to invite the members of this community to give blood Saturday, in Montreal, in particular, to facilitate the treatment of sickle cell disease.

According to Héma-Québec, numerous blood transfusions at intervals are required to treat this hereditary disease of the blood, which particularly affects the black communities. Given this high frequency, it is important that the donor is compatible to avoid transfusion reactions. According to the organization, the probability of finding a compatible donor is increased if the donor and are of the same origin, hence the importance of increasing the number of donors from the black communities.

A blood drive organised by the round Table of the Month of Black history will take place on the 17th of February next, between 10 h 30 and 16 h, at the Centre d’éducation des adultes (CEDA), 2515 rue Delisle, Montreal.

Héma-Québec welcomed the increase of 6000 donors of color black since the implementation of various initiatives, in 2009.
