Companies in personal care have not waited for the regulations of Health Canada and have already begun to remove a preservative and is responsible for allergic reactions to their products.

“All the personal care products of brand PJC and Personal currently in production do not contain methylisothiazolinone “, confirms Hélène Bisson, vice-president, Communications the Jean Coutu Group.

The Journal reported yesterday that Health Canada had recently warned the industry that it intended to prohibit the methylisothiazolinone (MI) in products rinse-free and reduce the maximum allowable concentration in rinse-off products in front of the growing number of cases of allergies on the skin. The government organization must conduct a public consultation and make its decision next fall.

The chain of pharmacy in quebec is not the only one to act before Health Canada makes its decision. The cosmetics company L’oréal, which owns such brands Maybelline, Lancôme and Garnier, withdrew gradually from these products that are not rinsed as soon as 2013. In addition, no new product is formulated with the MI and the existing products are redesigned, mentions Virginia Hotte-Dupuis, a spokesman for L’oréal Canada.

    Long process

The brand Clarins is already applying the eu regulation in us, as it has been since last February that the MID is prohibited on the other side of the Atlantic in products rinse-free, and its concentration reduced to the products rinsed out. The French company also expects that the withdraw completely from all these products by the end of the year.

“It is a change that takes some time because we don’t just remove it [and put the product on the shelves],” said Danielle La Roche, national director, public relations at Clarins Canada.

Lionel Ripoll, professor of cosmetology at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi confirms that a company can put six months to a year, or even longer to reformulate a product. All the more preservatives are essential ingredients.

    Essential

“Without them, we could not keep the products more than a week, it would be necessary to keep them in the fridge. As it keeps the cosmetics in the bathroom, where it is hot and moist, where all of the bacteria, yeast and mold from growing, you could end up with people who contaminate the skin with bacteria that can be dangerous, ” he explains.

Some companies have even built their full range of personal care products and household without having to use it. This is notably the case of companies in quebec Attitude and Biovert.
