While Quebec calls for greater transparency of the international Organization of the francophonie (OIF), the prime minister Philippe Couillard will meet with the secretary general of the institution, Michaëlle Jean, in Paris next week. This meeting occurs eight months after a controversy surrounding the spending of Mrs. Jean. It precedes a summit of the OIF, to be held in October, where the secretary wishes to obtain a new mandate of four years, States and member governments, including Quebec.
Transparency
At a meeting of the member nations and governments of the OIF, on the 21st of February in Paris, the representatives of Canada and of Quebec have called for concrete measures to increase the level of transparency of the institution, said a source close to the folder.
They have requested the establishment of “mechanisms” in place in their respective jurisdictions, which has been greeted with reservation by the director Adama Ouane. He advocated for the importance of achieving a shared vision by all members of the OIF.
Next week, the improvement of governance and transparency to the OIF as well as the reappointment of Ms. Jean will be discussed during the meeting with Mr. Couillard, indicated a variety of sources. In recent weeks, several sources have reported that a work climate is particularly tense at the OIF. The suspension of the director of the francophonie economic and digital Kako Nubukpo has contributed to this.
