Shapovalov has reached the fourth round of the International of the United States after having crossed the stage of qualifications.
Toronto — Denis Shapovalov, the phenomenon of the time of tennis male, will represent Canada at the playoff of the Davis Cup against India from 15 to 17 September in Edmonton.
Tennis Canada made the announcement by press release Tuesday morning.
Captain Martin Laurendeau has also made it clear that Daniel Nestor, Vasek Pospisil and young, Brayden Schnur had been appointed to the canadian delegation. Wounded in the left wrist, Milos Raonic is not available.
18 years of age, Shapovalov has had a month to dream, during which he has made giant leaps in the ranking of the ATP. At the Rogers Cup, in Montreal, he has in turn defeated the Argentinean Juan Martin del Potro and the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, on the way to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Earlier this week, he has reached the fourth round of the International of the United States after having crossed the stage of qualifications. Along the way, he has eliminated French veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets during a match of the second round.
For Shapovalov, it will be a third appearance in the Davis Cup. His last presence, in February, had ended on a negative note, while he had been disqualified and fined after hitting the referee-in-chief to the eye after having violently struck the ball, in disgust, during a match against great Britain’s Kyle Edmund. He had later apologized.
If Canada wins, it will be guaranteed to evolve within the Group in the world in 2018.
