Donald Trump ready to step out of NAFTA, says Justin Trudeau
Justin Trudeau says Donald Trump was considering withdrawing the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) until the two politicians talk on the phone Wednesday night.
Speaking to reporters in Saskatchewan on Thursday, the Prime Minister said he told the American president that they had both been elected with similar programs to maintain or create jobs for the population.
Justin Trudeau added that he mentioned that many jobs and businesses were created under the NAFTA and that a broken agreement would cause too much disruption.
The two men agreed to review the NAFTA together and improve it, a renegotiation similar to what has already been done in the past, said Trudeau.
Renegotiating NAFTA was one of the main campaign promises of Donald Trump’s campaign, but time is running short to achieve its goal.
The US Congress has not yet authorized the negotiations and it could remain less than a year to reach an agreement before the elections in Mexico.
