VICTORIA | motorists in the region of Victoria, in British Columbia, which are pinched for distracted driving have had the surprise of being able to choose their punishment.

In order to combat this scourge on the roads, and more particularly against the temptation to use their cell phone while driving, the Victoria police has launched a pilot project. The arrested drivers were offered the opportunity to pay a fine of more than $ 500 or to attend an awareness course on the dangers of distracted driving, with a duration of three hours.

In the course of the pilot project, which was held over a period of two days at the end of December, 74 of motorists have been caught by the police for distracted driving. The number, 42, opted for a ticket, while the other 32 have agreed to participate in the seminar.

“Distracted driving is responsible for more serious accidents and fatalities as driving while intoxicated”, explained the head of the Victoria police, Del Manak, to explain the implementation of the pilot program.

“We still see lots of drivers with their phone in their car”, for its part, deplored the sergente Shannon Perkins.
