A man of 77 years old is expected to appear in court today to have struck fatally a worker after smashing a barrier, by embarking in the opposite direction on the ferry connecting Sorel-Tracy Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, in Lanaudière Thursday to 15: 30.
The victim, who worked for the Société des traversiers du Québec, and lived in the region died of his injuries after the rescue had been necessary, according to witnesses, jaws of life to get out from below the car of the motorist.
The driver of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital, in his case to treat a nervous shock. He is expected to appear in court today to face charges of dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death.
The alcohol in question
According to a witness to the events, the driver would have crossed several hurdles to full speed in zigzagging, before diving on the ferry in the opposite direction. Passengers from Sorel-Tracy were then to land on the side of Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola.
“I was waiting for the cars to go for boarding when I’ve seen it happen in the reverse direction by the output path. I panicked and asked “but what is happening there’, ” says Alex Side-Gilbert.
The ferry service was halted to allow investigators from the Sûreté du Québec to do their job.
The standards Commission, equity, health and safety in the workplace (CNESST) will also need to focus on this incident, given that the victim is a worker.
To 20 h Thursday, the site of the STQ stated that the tie was always out of service.
