CALGARY, Alberta – TransCanada was asked Thursday to the national energy Board (NEB) to suspend temporarily its applications relating to Energy projects Is and main Network Is.

The company thus intends to give time – 30 days in fact – to undertake an exhaustive review of the recent changes that have been imposed by the NEB with respect to the matters to be studied within the framework of the process of evaluation of the two pipeline projects.

“The suspension will give us time to conduct a thorough examination of the recent changes announced by the NEB on the list of problems and factors in environmental assessment of projects, while understanding how these changes affect the cost, timing and viability of the projects,” wrote TransCanada, in a statement.

“In addition to Energy Is, we will continue to advance our program of short-term capital of $ 24 billion, in addition to our opportunities in the longer term,” said Russ Girling, president and chief executive officer of TransCanada.

Greenpeace responded in the evening to the announcement of the company based in Calgary, Alberta. “TransCanada is concerned with an assessment of greenhouse gas emissions, which, if well made, would conclude that this project is totally incompatible with the Paris Agreement and our commitments in the climate,” said Patrick Bonin, head of the campaign Climate and Energy of Greenpeace Canada in Montreal.

“TransCanada has difficulty to find oil companies who want to use the Keystone XL pipeline, and therefore Energy Is looking increasingly like a white elephant, not to mention the real wall of opposition and the fact that this pipeline will never cross the border of Québec,” added Mr. Bonin.

On the side of Équiterre, one always believes that Energy Is on an artificial respirator. “On the 23rd of August, we stated that another nail had been hammered into the coffin of Energy Is, it is clear that another has just been added today. It is however necessary to remain vigilant and not waver in our efforts to ensure that the project is permanently abandoned”, said Steven Guilbeault, senior director and spokesperson of Équiterre.
