While it is normal for this time of the year in the south of the province vary between – 6 °C day and 16 °C at night, the mercury will maintain 10 degrees below these seasonal values for the next two weeks. The colder days are anticipated in the period from 26 to 29 December.

This unusually cold weather, covering the centre of Canada and the northern United States, is caused by a large air mass from the arctic. The frigid weather will be accompanied by falls of snow are frequent during the long vacation of the end of the year.

The passage of depressions to the south of the province over the next few days will build-up close to the 10 to 15 cm on some areas more south of here to Saturday. Other falls of snow are forecast for Christmas day and new Year’s day so that disturbances from the Great Lakes will slip on in Quebec. Precipitation of ice pellets and freezing rain are also expected in the south-western quebec, on Saturday. The road conditions may be difficult on these regions during the end of the week, while a lot of people will be moving.

It is not uncommon that Quebec will be hit by a snow storm in the second part of the month of December. In Montréal for example, the probability of seeing a snowfall in excess of 15 cm at the end of December, close to 50 %.

The beginning of December was very mild on most of the regions. The temperatures have even exceeded 10 °C in Montreal in the first week of the month. The trend of the time much colder than the seasonal values is subsequently reinforced and is likely to continue in the first days of 2018.
