In the wake of the spread of “fake news,” Facebook is testing a new feature with the news of the moment by associating itself with over fifty publishers renowned throughout the world.
The canadian publishers who participate in the beta version are: Global News, CityNews, CBC, as well as the Journal de Montréal, the only media French-speaking canadian of the lot.
“We are grateful that Facebook seeks to promote the work of the media that are actually on the ground to report the information as quickly as possible,” notes Mathieu Turbide, vice president, digital Content at Quebecor and responsible for the digital strategy of the Newspaper of Montreal. “We will closely monitor the results of this test on our audiences”.
Success in the United States
The first wave of testing took place on December 8, 2017 January 14, 2018 in the United States, while some in the media have could add the words “breaking News” to some of their publications.
The publishers consulted have noted an increase in shares (11% more), comments (4%), clicks (4$) and of “likes” (7%).
The Washington Post, it says it is packed by the reaction of subscribers. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Facebook to broadcast our news from last time,” says Dave Merrell, principal product manager. “We are also excited — but not surprised — to see our readers respond as they have done”.
Merrell said: “we provide accurate information quickly and has always been at the heart of our mission, and [as we can get caught up in the whirlwind of the information of the time], we want our readers to be able to easily identify when you publish new stories [about the events of that time]”
