Sainte-Clothilde-de-Horton | A fire in an agricultural building, which will deprive 75 cows of food for the winter. The farmers want help from their colleagues to feed the beasts.

Jeremiah Bergeron, a 23-year-old, and Maude Denoncourt, 21 years old, are owners of the farm Jemau of Sainte-Clothilde-de-Horton, in Centre-du-Québec for a year and a half ago.

One of their buildings that housed farm machinery and 400 bales of hay is passed to the fire Monday morning.

“The machinery, it is a lesser evil. Our insurers will surely see quickly. By contrast, the 400 bales of hay which were used to feed more than 75 animals, it is much more difficult to recover. The animals need to eat that there is a fire or not”, explained Mr. Bergeron, who is said to have been caught off guard.

    Help

The couple of farmers sought the help of other farmers to succeed in feeding their herd of 35 dairy cows, but also animals of three other producers were buying hay from the farm Jemau.

The fire happens at the worst time so that the harvests are completed in a few weeks and that the next harvest is not expected until the beginning of next summer.

“It will be difficult to expect a harvest on frozen soil. In the beginning of the summer season, we would have made every effort to relieve us quickly, but mother nature will offer us some resources,” said Mr. Bergeron.

A few hours after the fire, the couple has issued a message on the social networks to successfully collect the 400 bales of hay, round which they have need by the spring.

According to the fire service, the fire could be electrical in nature and accidental. The fire destroyed the barn that housed for more than $ 200 000 of farm equipment and more than 400 round bales of hay with a value of $16,000.

Firefighters have managed to save the building, which housed 35 animals, and that was barely two metres from the blaze. The director-fire Frédérick Marcotte and his team of firefighters have been highly effective, but the hay barn was burned and straw-like. “They have not been able to do,” sighed Jeremiah Bergeron.

    Not give up

The two new farmers have cashed the shot difficult, but claim that they will not decline the arm to much and that they can feed their animals during the winter.

“We have put a lot of time and energy into this project. We will not give up that easily”, they explain.
