The Montrealers accused of having strangled to death his girlfriend’s native has just been found guilty of murder in the second degree.
“Guilty”, has launched juror number 2, the trial of Kwasi Alfred Benjamin, before all the other jurors to confirm the verdict.
Head low and eyes red in the box of the accused, Benjamin did not say a word, hearing a word that condemns it automatically to life in prison.
The murder occurred in may 2015, in the Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal. For some time already, the relationship between Benjamin and his girlfriend Nellie Angutiguluk was acrimonious. The couple was arguing, often about money, and the accused 32-year-old complained that the wife was not contributing to expenses.
And in the days preceding the tragedy, the couple had been seen in bars in the process of arguing. The police had to intervene to their exit of the establishment. Another time, Benjamin was pushed to the ground, his girlfriend 29-year-old, reproaching them for not paying the rent.
Ten days earlier, Benjamin would have pushed Ms. Angutiguluk on the ground, complaining that she did not pay the rent. The relationship ended in murder.
At the funeral of the deceased, he was presented with his new girlfriend, was noted by the prosecutor to the Crown Dennis Galiatsatos at the beginning of the trial.
The defence had pointed out that the victim, a native of Puvirnituq in northern Quebec, had held about suicidal. The lawyer Paul Skolnik had asked for the acquittal, but the jury has rather leaned toward the theory of the murder.
Now that Benjamin is guilty, then the judge Michael Stober has to decide how many years the murderer must serve before being eligible for parole. Lawyers can share their recommendations at an upcoming hearing.
