SAINT-FÉLICIEN, quebec – The federal and provincial governments provide financial support of $ 13 million to farmers who have been affected by the bouts of hail earlier this year.
The joint announcement was made at a press conference, in Saint-Félicien, on Friday morning.
The farmers had to incur unforeseen expenses, a result of the damage caused to their crops last spring.
The budget will be distributed between the regions of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Chaudières-Appalaches and Montérégie.
The minister of Agriculture, Laurent Lessard, and the liberal federal Lac-Saint-Jean show that it is an exceptional measure, since the damages that have been caused by the episodes of hail greatly exceeded that of the events of the same nature have occurred in recent years.
The joint initiative of the governments does not replace the coverage of crop insurance available to farmers affected.
The amount is devoted to the Canada-Quebec initiative to help the agricultural companies.
Producers have until February 28 to enroll in the program.
