More and more children perish in the war in Syria, ” said Monday the united Nations Fund for children (Unicef), while the conflict between this week in its eighth year.
The number of children killed in the war in Syria has doubled in 2017, compared to the previous year, noted by Unicef in a report.
“In 2017, the indiscriminate violence and extreme has killed the largest number ever known to children -50 % more than in 2016,” says Unicef, adding that 2018 was a more dark yet.
Nearly 200 children have been killed in the rebel enclave of the Ghouta eastern since February in the shelling of the regime forces, according to the Observatory syrian Human rights (OSDH).
Children represent 20 % of the civilian victims of this offensive, according to the OSDH.
In its report, Unicef cited Sami, a child of the south of Syria, now a refugee in Jordan.
“I went out to play in the snow with my cousins. A bomb fell. I saw the hands of my cousin fly in front of my eyes. I lost both my legs,” he says.
Children with disabilities “face a very real risk of being neglected and stigmatized as the conflict continues unabated”, says the Unicef regional director, Geert Cappelaere.
According to Unicef, approximately 3.3 million children are exposed to improvised explosive devices across the country, while dozens of schools have been affected in 2017 only.
