Information : the internet as popular as tv in Quebec

    MONTREAL – The internet has joined television in Quebec as a source of journalistic content, according to a study by the ORGANIZATION released Thursday.

    Television remains the medium of choice for information in Quebec, but by a margin tiny. Approximately 72% of Quebecers look at it for this use, according to the ORGANIZATION that conducts this type of annual survey for the past 16 years.

    For its part, the use of the internet as a source of information is on the rise, as 71 % of Quebecers had recourse to it in 2017. This is 13 percentage points more than in 2013. The increase is particularly marked in the 65-74 years of age. They were only 30 % for information on the internet in 2013 compared to 52 % in 2017.

    The radio informs that 48% of Quebecers, according to respondents to this survey. For its part, the press has experienced a marked decline, from 39 % in 2016 to 32% in 2017. The printed journals close to the prom, since 16% of Quebecers read them for information.

    On mobile phones and tablets, 33 % use it to keep up with the news, a figure stable for the past two years. The university graduates, those with an income above $ 80,000 and respondents aged 25 to 44 years are more likely to use it for this purpose.

    In the end, CEFRIO believes that the Québécois diversify more their sources of information regularly consulted three different media, on average.

    This telephone survey of 1003 adults was conducted from 25 September to 5 October last. The margin of error is 3.1 %, 19 times out of 20.
