OTTAWA – Karina Gould became the first federal minister to give birth to a child during his tenure.

The minister of democratic Institutions gave birth to a boy in good health “earlier this week”, she announced in a press release Friday morning.

“Alberto and I were delighted to finally meet Oliver. I take my time with my little man, but we will see you back soon to the parliament!” wrote on Twitter the liberal mp for Burlington, Ontario.

His message was accompanied by a photo of the couple with the infant to the hospital and the hashtag #femmesenpolitique. The politician of 30 years becomes the first minister to take maternity leave.

“As we join the many other canadian parents who juggle the responsibilities of career and family, Alberto and I want to thank everyone for their kind words and their support,” she said.

In 1987, Sheila Copps became the first mp to give birth during his tenure.

In the absence of Karina Gould, the portfolio of democratic Institutions will be managed by the president of the Treasury Board, Scott Brison.
