A part of downtown Montreal was paralyzed by a major gas leak on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred a little after 15 h, at the corner of Sainte-Catherine street West and McGill College avenue.

Several streets were closed to traffic in the area, as a precautionary measure.

In total, fifty firefighters were dispatched to the scene and representatives of Énergir (formerly Gaz Métro) have also been sent.

Plugging the leak was expected to take “several hours”, according to the authorities.

On his Twitter account, the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal reported that power outages were likely to occur in the affected area.
