Toronto — The Russian Maria Sharapova will not participate in the component-female of the Rogers Cup, which will be held in Toronto next week, due to an injury to the left forearm.
Tennis Canada has confirmed the news in a press release Thursday morning.
“I’m so sorry to miss the Rogers Cup this year,” said Sharapova. I appreciate the initiative of the leaders of the tournament giving me a pass, as well as the support from my fans in Toronto. I am disappointed that an injury to me, take again the gap of the tennis courts, but I’m going to work with force to resume the practice of the sport that I love as quickly as possible. “
Sharapova, who had received a pass from the organizers, felt pain during the tournament in Stanford earlier this week, and she was forced to withdraw from the competition.
The absence of Sharapova opens the door to the main table to the young canadian Bianca Andreescu, who had been offered an invitation to the round of qualifications. This invitation was instead given to Carol Zhao, another Canadian.
Andreescu, a Toronto-based 17-year-old, will now join Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard and Francoise Abanda in the main chart.
Andreescu participates at the tournament in Washington and has even signed the first victory of his young career in the main draw of a tournament of the WTA tour earlier this week. On Thursday, she must battle against the French Kristina Mladenovic, second-seeded, in a duel of the second round.
The last pass for the two rounds of qualifying, Saturday and Sunday, will go to Quebec’s Charlotte Robillard-Millette or to the Canadian Carson Branstine. The two players must compete against each other on Thursday in the final pre-qualifications.
