    SEVEN-ISLANDS – return to the negotiation between the mining company RioTinto IOC and the Steelworkers union was of short duration.

    In the aftermath of the resumption of the talks, the parties are back to square one.

    According to the union, RioTinto IOC has maintained its requests for concession, what it deems to be unacceptable.

    Of the 1,800 union workers have voted in favour of an indefinite general strike at meetings held over the past two weeks.

    Sign that a conflict is underway, the union reports that discussions have been initiated with the employer for the maintenance of essential services in the event of a work stoppage.

    Employees of the Labrador, subject to an act of the legislature, will meet in assembly in the next week and a strike could be triggered as early as 23 march.

    In Sept-Îles, where labour relations are governed by the canada labour code, the strike could be triggered in mid-April.
