MATANE | A dozen residences in the area of Matane-sur-Mer, Matane, have been flooded or damaged by shards of ice and stone because of the overflowing of the river St. Lawrence, as a result of the bomb underground, which struck the regions of eastern Québec.

“We thought to avoid the worst, because there’s a very nice cover of ice and it was thought that even if there was a very high tide, last night, with good winds, the ice would have been able to absorb the movement of these waves-here”, explained the mayor of Matane, Jerome Landry, in an interview with TVA News.

“We hoped for a reprieve [Saturday] morning, but it is still difficult, the 132 is still closed on a very large portion and to the Matapedia, the 195 is also closed,” he adds.

Although it is still difficult to assess the overall damage, the mayor Landry has assured that the emergency measures plan has been put in place quickly. The affected citizens are invited to take many pictures of the damage.

The Town of Matane has indicated on its website that due to bad weather conditions, the library, the swimming pool and arena are closed.
