MONTREAL | police officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) have put their lives in danger, in the night of Wednesday and Thursday, in order to save a baby of 18 months who has been left alone in an apartment, where a fire has taken shape in the borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

At around 00: 45 a.m., officers of the SPVM, circulating near Dézéry and Rouen, were arrested by the citizens, they have mentioned that there was a fire in an apartment of the rue Dézéry.

At their arrival, they were able to catch a glimpse of a dense smoke which was pouring from the building containing eight dwellings. Citizens shouting that there was a baby inside the apartment on the second floor where the fire raged.

“They came to the inside using a fire extinguisher and they crawled up to the baby, who was in respiratory distress,” said Manuel Couture, spokesperson for the SPVM.

For the chief operating officer of the Montreal fire Department (SIM), Benoit Martel, it is a heroic gesture. “Given that they have no respiratory equipment, they put their life in danger to rescue the baby, and without their intervention, he would surely have been injuries or he would have died.”

Police then smashed the doors to evacuate other residents.

Just like the child, eight police officers were overcome by the smoke and the four of them were transported to a hospital. We aren’t afraid for their lives.

The firefighters have taken over and are then assured that the fire does not spread to other homes, but also to adjacent buildings.

The investigator of the SIM mentioned that there was a fire for cooking. The damages are assessed at $50,000.

Although the fire is considered accidental, police have proceeded to arrest the lady who had the baby in his charge, and accusations of negligence criminal could be filed against it.

Before leaving the premises, firefighters have installed smoke detectors in half of apartments of the building since they were free.
