OTTAWA – The journey controversial of Justin Trudeau in India and a federal budget received with indifference leave traces negative on the popularity of the liberals in the country as a whole.
The conservatives have, in fact, ahead of the liberals in the voting intentions of Canadians, according to an Ipsos poll conducted this week on behalf of the Global network News.
If the election were held now, the conservative Andrew Scheer would get 38 % of the vote and the liberals 33 %. This is a decline of 5 points for the party of Justin Trudeau and a 7-point rise for the conservatives, since the last Ipsos survey in December.
The NDP remains at the same level with 21 % of expected (1 % more than in December).
This is the first time since the election of Mr. Trudeau that the liberals do not dominate the voting intentions, said one head of Ipsos ‘ Darrell Bricker.
According to him, the liberals have only themselves to blame. “The most remarkable thing with this situation is that it has nothing to do with the qualities of the opposition parties,” said Mr. Bricker to Global News.
“In fact, he added, it is a way for people to assess the current performance of the government and of the liberals.”
Thus, the surveyed persons consider severely the most recent trip of Justin Trudeau in India : a mere 16 % of them feel that the journey has had a positive influence on the relations between Canada and India, while 40 % felt it was negative and only 21 % believe that it has had no impact.
The last federal budget, tabled Tuesday, collects a positive note, with only 9 % of those surveyed by Ipsos. A proportion of 23 % of the respondents judge negatively, while 69 % are completely indifferent.
In Quebec
Please note: all of these setbacks have not succeeded in dislodging the liberals in the lead in voting intentions in Quebec, where the party is harvesting 42 % support, followed by the NDP at 21 %, followed by the conservatives at 20 % and the Bloc québécois is at 13 %.
This is a slight drop compared to December, while the figures in Quebec were the following : liberal 45 %, Bloc quebecois 21 %, NDP 15 % and the conservatives 14 %.
The survey this week was conducted by the internet on February 28 and march 1 at 1001 Canadians. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 %, 19 times out of 20.
