The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, a member of the Movement 5 Stars (M5S, populist), has announced that the centre of the Italian capital would be prohibited diesel cars private from 2024.
Ms. Raggi had made this announcement Monday during a speech in Mexico city in front of women-mayors met in the framework of a meeting titled “Women4Climate” (women for climate), and has aired his speech on social networks at his return to Rome.
“Starting in 2024, it will be forbidden to use diesel cars in the centre of Rome,” she said, without giving details.
The diesel has been declining for several years in Europe and in the world, which forced the manufacturers to return en masse to the petrol and to accelerate the electrification of vehicles.
Two days ago, the Financial Times has reported that the manufacturer of Italian-american Fiat Chrysler (FCA) was going to announce in June the abandonment of the diesel for the engines of its passenger cars by 2022 as a result of falling demand and rising costs.
And on Tuesday, the German court has paved the way for bans of movement of old diesel in the cities, plunging millions of people into uncertainty.
