OTTAWA | The massive arrival of refugees crossing irregularly the border between the United States and Canada seems to be beautiful and be reabsorbed, shows data released on Monday by the government.
While more than 8,500 people had been intercepted by the royal Canadian mounted police in July and August, 1720 refugees who were arrested in September after crossing the border in Quebec, said Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
A few dozens of migrants tried their luck in Manitoba (78), British Columbia (79), and Alberta (4).
Since the beginning of the year, it is Quebec that has had to deal with the bulk of the wave of irregular immigration from the United States, with 13 626 interceptions in nine months. Manitoba (891 arrivals) and British Columbia (564 arrivals) were the other two provinces are the most occupied. In total, 15 of 102 persons were arrested at the border since the beginning of the year.
In Quebec, the crisis had forced the intervention of the army and the installation of a temporary encampment at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, this was to accommodate asylum-seekers. These have then been transferred to different centres, mainly in the Montreal area, while waiting for their cases to be analysed by the authorities.
The camp was then dismantled in September.
