The intense cold continues to hit a good part of Quebec and it will still endure several days before it warms up. This cold weather is mainly affecting those who live outside, especially the homeless.
It is estimated that there are approximately 5000 homeless people in Montreal. Several teams are mobilizing to come to their aid, but also the population.
“It has everything, it can go from winter wear to the suits for job interviews, underwear, shoes, socks, mittens, scarves, hats, sportswear, one really has everything. People give us, it really is receiving a lot of donations and it is a period that is very busy”, said Saturday Akram Aloulou, supervisor of emergency services at the Old Brewery Mission.
During the Holiday season, people were many to give out bags of warm clothing which are then distributed to that charity.
“Most are living on social assistance, these people do not have the means to pay for warm clothing suitable for the conditions of -30 or -35 degrees. These are really extreme conditions, people give, it receives each year, people are generous,” added Mr. Aloulou.
In addition to its ongoing programs to help the homeless people, the Old Brewery Mission has always a dozen beds that are free in case of emergency for a night or a very cold night. In addition, a shuttle bus travels the streets to ensure that nobody sleeps outside with this cold weather.
