Canada and 18 other countries, including the United States and Mexico have signed an agreement to eliminate roaming charges between them when using a mobile phone.

“It is very far away in Canada. We had a bill which was nearing the equivalent of a second mortgage from home in roaming charges up to five to ten dollars per day for a maximum of 100-150 $ per month. Now, people can finally use their phone abroad without having a smart card is local, ” says Julien Valois-Francœur, a lawyer specializing in telecommunications.

The CRTC had limited effect a few years ago roaming charges to $ 100 per day during a monthly billing cycle, unless the customer expressly agrees to pay those fees. Since December, it is also possible to unlock for free the phone.

The holders of a package will be able to use their phone in the partner countries, located almost everywhere in America, without paying a fee. This decision is similar to that adopted by the european Union in June 2017.

The date of application of the agreement has not yet been announced. It may also be that there are restrictions, all the details of the agreement have not yet been released.
