STANSTEAD – While thousands of Quebecers fell in holidays, major renovations were causing congestion at border crossings of Standstead in the eastern Townships on Friday. The work is being carried out in Derby Line, on the other side of the american lines.

“I have a week of vacation, I took the opportunity to go fishing with friends, has entrusted a construction worker. However, we planned the coup, we left very early [Friday] morning to not get caught like last time.”

During the weekend of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Canada day, the holiday makers have waited nearly two hours before crossing the customs, and this, in spite of the warnings of the ministry of Transport.

“It is recommended that people avoid the area of Stanstead, due to work, and to turn to border larger, as that of Lacolle, Saint-Armand, Armstrong, able to accommodate a larger crowd,” explained a spokesperson at the regional level for the department of Transportation.

The work began in the fall of 2016 and are expected to stretch until at least the end of the year. The u.s. government has invested $ 23 million in the reconstruction of the position.

On average, more than 4000 vehicles that pass through the border posts of Standstead per day.
