The community commemorates soberly on the tragedy of the Landslides

    SAINT-BERNARD-DE-BEAUCE | communities of Saint-Bernard de Beauce and Landslides have commemorated soberly, Sunday, the tragedy that has claimed the lives of 44 people on 13 October 1997.

    For the occasion, dozens of victims ‘ relatives, all originating from Saint-Bernard, gathered in the village church beauceron.

    Of the number, there was Sylvie Scott, the organist of the parish who lost both of her parents during the tragedy. “These are big emotions. With the support and with lots of help, we could make it through, but the wound… It is as if you have a scar”, she confided in an interview with TVA News.

    “When we are all gathered together as a family, I up is always a glass to my parents,” added Ms. Scott.

    The priest Marc-André Lachance remembers very well the drama. “I had seen them in the morning in the bus as I went to bless them. And then, I learn in the afternoon that the bus is in the ravine”, is remembered with emotion, M. Lachance.

    The latter is said to be happy to see again, twenty years later, the relatives of the victims of the tragedy. “At the time, we didn’t know how to get out”, he told.

    On October 13, 1997, a bus roared down the coast of Landslides due to a lack of brake to finish the race at the bottom of a ravine, causing the death of 43 inhabitants of Saint-Bernard and the driver of the bus. It is one of the worst road accidents in Quebec’s history.

    Next Friday, the bells of the churches of Saint Bernard and Landslides will resonate simultaneously at 13: 50.

    A memorial mass is also planned on Sunday 15 October to Landslides.
