Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich appealed to the Zurich court with a request to ban the local media to talk about his attempts to obtain a residence permit in Switzerland. The court of the tycoon, however, refused, citing the fact that he did not intend to deal with censoring. An article about the incident, local journalists are “saying” is titled “the Lesson of media freedom”.

Freedom of media is one of the main elements for freedom of expression and its role is difficult to overestimate, because it links the state and society, helping to ensure control over the authorities at all levels, “- said journalists SonntagsZeitung, commenting on the judgement of the Federal court of Switzerland decision.

In his lawsuit, Roman Abramovich appealed to the Swiss court to ban all mention of it in the press, and existing notes to delete. More likely the former owner of football club “Chelsea” was outraged by an article in a local publication, where it is said that the billionaire failed to receive a residence permit in Switzerland.

The court also ordered Roman to pay 5 thousand Swiss francs, which must repay court costs. This decision is highly unusual, because the trial between the newspaper and the Russian is still ongoing.
