The Office of the independent surveys (EIB) announced Tuesday the initiation of an investigation into the death of a man that occurred on Monday, during his detention by the Eeyou Eenou Police Force to Waskaganish, in Nord-du-Québec.
According to the preliminary information held by the EIB, the man would have been arrested to 13 pm, Monday, possibly under the influence of alcohol and drugs. To 23 h, during his detention, he is said to have complained of stomach pains before being transferred by ambulance to a clinic about 20 minutes later. His death was found Tuesday at 3 p.m.
“The investigation of the EIB will determine if these reports are true,” said the government agency, by issuing a press release on Tuesday.
Seven investigators from the EIB have been loaded in the folder. They should arrive in the small community located at the south-east of James bay to 18 h on Tuesday.
The EIB has made a call to the Sûreté du Québec to act as a body of police support in this investigation. The SQ will provide a technician in forensic identification who will work under the supervision of the investigators of the EIB.
The EIB has in particular the mission to investigate as soon as a citizen dies during his detention by a police force in Quebec.
