Randeep Sarai, the liberal mp behind the invitation sent to the former extremist sikh Jaspal Atwal during a trip of the prime minister Justin Trudeau in India, has apologized and withdrew from a committee on Tuesday evening.
The mp, who represents the riding of Surrey-Centre in British Columbia, has left his position of president of the liberal Caucus of the Pacific.
“I, again, apologize for my role in these events unfortunate. In the future, I will be a better judgment. Since I don’t want to be a distraction for the caucus of the Pacific, I’m going to resign my position of president,” wrote Mr. Sarai on his Twitter account.
The government of Justin Trudeau found himself in the turmoil last week, as the wife of the prime minister, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, is made take in photograph with Jaspal Atwal. The latter, a former extremist who had been found guilty of having attempted to kill an indian minister in 1986, had also been invited to a dinner in Delhi last Thursday.
The prime minister’s office had indicated that the invitation had been withdrawn as soon as it is aware of it and that it had been made by Randeep Sarai. A responsible government had, however, suggested that this story could have been mounted by american indian factions wishing to harm relations canada-indian.
