The government of Canada has not waited for the royal seal to cool to start singing the new national anthem. The version inclusive has been intoned a few minutes after being officially entered into force, both in the olympic village in Pyeongchang than in the House of commons.
Accompanied by the wife of Mauril Bélanger, sponsor of the bill, the minister for Heritage, Mélanie Joly, welcomed the outcome.
“After two years, the private bill of Mauril Bélanger received the royal proclamation. Finally, the English version of the national anthem is going to reflect the two genders. Finally, women across the country may find themselves in the lyrics.”
Following this statement, members of the NDP and the PLC gathered at the back of the House of commons to sing the new version of the national anthem.
Even in Pyeongchang
Ms. Joly has confirmed that this is the amended version of O Canada be sung for the duration of the olympic Games. Indeed, it is this version that the delegation made the play Wednesday morning at the opening of the canadian house in the olympic village.
Change criticized by the opposition
By replacing the reference to “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command”, the liberal government has received a number of criticisms of the tenors from the conservatives. The words French-speaking, were not modified by the bill.
