If he is elected, the Parti québécois (PQ) will abandon the project Network express metropolitan (REM) of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.

The PQ is especially pronounced in favour of a network of trams, less expensive, with services on the island of Montreal and the South Shore.

With a budget totaling $ 7.4 billion, the same expected for the realization of the REM only, the PQ undertakes to carry out all the projects included in its strategy of mobility in Montreal, called “the Great Release.”

In addition to a network of trams, this strategy provides for, among other of new routes and more departures to the commuter rail and bus rapid transit throughout the region metropolitan of Montreal. The PQ is committed to improving the existing lanes before planning any new construction of lines.

This was announced Tuesday by the head of the PQ’s Jean-François Lisée in a press conference. “The Great Release”, he announced, could contribute to a 10% reduction in road congestion by eliminating 133 000 cars by 2025.

The estimated costs for the abandonment of contracts already allocated for the REM are unknown, ” said Mr. Lisée. These costs would be borne by the State of quebec, “if it finds that the amount is reasonable in light of the gain achieved by passing the General Release.”
