MONTREAL – police officers of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) have conducted a search and apprehended two individuals who would be involved in a network of smuggling of tobacco, Wednesday, in the framework of a special operation conducted in Richelieu, Montérégie.
The people arrested, who operate in the region of Bury, in Estrie, could face charges under the income tax Act and the tobacco. They will be appearing at the palais de justice in Saint-Hyacinthe.
During the operation, four police officers attached to the investigation Division on the contraband seized 24 000 cigarettes and 600 little cigars in a vehicle.
In collaboration with Revenu Québec, the Division of investigations on the smuggling mandate to fight against tobacco smuggling in order to preserve the integrity of the quebec tax system. It also retrieves the properties and assets used by the offenders.
