The summer of 2017 promises to be one of the deadliest on the roads of the province, warns the Sûreté du Québec. Only for the construction holiday, the number of victims has doubled compared to last year.

The provincial police implore motorists to be more cautious. Speed and distraction are responsible for the majority of fatal accidents in the last two weeks.

In the summer of 2016 (June, July and August), 63 persons have lost the life on the territory of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). This year, the month of August has barely begun and already the balance sheet amounted to 59 deaths.

“Last year, there were 19 fatal collisions in August. At this time, it has nine. I’m worried for the rest of the month. It is a matter of concern “, says captain Paul Leduc, the head of service of the road traffic safety Directorate to the SQ.

    “Disastrous “

The police made public yesterday its road safety record “disastrous” for the two weeks of construction holidays from July 21 to August 6. The worst of the last six years. No fewer than 22 persons have lost their lives this year (see table). It is two times more than last year, while the road that had killed 11.

The SQ, however, noted an improvement in the road safety record in general. In 2016, dated as of August 6, there were 142 fatal collisions. In 2017, there have been 18 less. But these are the last weeks that have blackened the table. For the month of July, there has been an increase of 36 % of deaths compared to 2016.

“We can talk of a summer that seems to be experiencing an upward trend. We want to remind people of the basic guidelines of security, yet, they know it. But between the knowing and the doing, there is unfortunately a big difference, ” says the policeman.

    The young

The SQ just to explain this massacre. Obviously, the number of trips, which increases in the summer could play a role.

“There are more activities in the summer. People drive without worrying about the danger, yet, there are, ” added Mr Leduc.

And once more, the young are overrepresented among the victims. In fact, 9 out of 22 were aged 25 years and under.

“There is nothing more difficult for a police officer than go to announce the death of a child to a family. It is devastating, ” insisted the captain Leduc.
