The flu can be a mild illness in healthy people, but fatal in some cases.

At the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, four patients are currently on an artificial respirator, due to the flu.

A lady 63 years of age, who contracted the disease while she was returning from a cruise is on an artificial respirator. It is also connected to a heart lung machine.

The medical team is doing everything to save it.

“In the majority of cases, the flu is mild. The most serious cases account for between 1 and 1.5% of the cases,” said Patrick Bellemare, intensivist and pulmonologist.

It recognizes that the prevalence of influenza is more important this season.

“Currently, we have four patients who are ventilated and which are carriers of the flu and I would tell you that the trend is expected to continue for the winter,” he says.

At the Hospital of the Sacred Heart, approximately 15 individuals go to the most severe stage of the flu, is to be connected to a heart lung machine, annually.

“The majority of the other will suffer respiratory care advanced without necessarily being assisted by the heart lung machine,” says the specialist.

He emphasizes that cases of people in intensive care currently had risk factors and were not vaccinated.

The flu is the cause of 300 deaths per year in Quebec.
