The overcrowding in the high schools of Montreal is due to a “failure of planning” in Quebec, denounces the opposition.

“It is disheartening that we didn’t see it coming, the wave. It was obvious that the students would eventually arrive at the secondary level, ” said Jean-François Roberge, the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ).

The phenomenon of primary schools which are overflowing in the city has caused much ink to flow in recent years. And now that the overcrowding made its entry at the secondary level, published The Journal, Thursday.

    In the hallway

This is the case with Sophie-Barat, in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, where students eat in the hallways due to lack of availability in the cafeteria.

“That’s unacceptable,” growls Carole Poirier, of the Parti québécois, which speaks of a “failure of planning” of the ministry of Education.

The three opposition parties believe that the department should revise its calculation of the forecast of the number of students to take better account of the arrival of immigrants, and residential complexes.

“I do not believe that this is incompetence on the part of officials. Rather, I think that it is a command that comes from on high, ” says mp Jean-François Roberge.

According to him, Quebec custody of strict criteria to reject expansion plans of the school boards.

For its part, the department says to be aware of the important need for space and be working to improve the situation. The projects for adding space retained will be the subject of an announcement next spring.
