MEXICO city – The canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau has discussed the renegotiation of the free trade Agreement north american (NAFTA) on Thursday while he was on his first official visit to Mexico, where president Enrique Pena Nieto has received.

This summit meeting between the two men took place after Justin Trudeau’s visit to Washington Wednesday to meet with Donald Trump, was admitted for the first time that Canada had to prepare for different contingencies, the american president had indicated that he could agree with one or the other of its north american partners, in the framework of bilateral agreements.

In a press briefing alongside Mr Pena Nieto, Justin Trudeau refused to say whether he had discussed it with the president of mexico of the possibility that the United States and Canada can agree among themselves without the Mexico.

He repeated several times that it is necessary to create opportunities for the middle class, and this, in the three countries.

“The president and I, we are in agreement that investments, to create opportunities for the middle class to succeed, this is the best way to create economic growth that will help our entire economy, all our countries,” said Mr. Trudeau.

“As I have said many times, we will take very seriously this opportunity to modernize the NAFTA, and we’re going to look at all the proposals put on the table, we’re going to take them seriously, we are going to assess this, we will propose our enhancements to the NAFTA, but we’re not going to respond when people offer ideas with which we disagree,” said Mr. Trudeau.

“These are negotiations, we understand how it works. We remain focused on the fact that we know that we have opportunities to improve this agreement to create benefits for our citizens in Canada and for our citizens of our country friends and partners in the NAFTA”, he continued, adding that the economic agreement tripartite “has contributed to the creation of millions of jobs in our three countries since many years”.

“We see the best way to modernize the trade between our three countries, it is to improve NAFTA, said Mr. Trudeau. We will continue to work on this, not because we are frozen in our approach, but because we know that it is a very positive and obvious to improve the situation for our workers, our businesses and our citizens.”

According to Justin Trudeau, president Pena Nieto and him are “in complete agreement” that it must “continue to seek in the circumstances [sometimes] unpredictable, the best way to deepen the bonds and trade between our countries, and especially, to improve opportunities for all our citizens”.

Before his head-to-head with president Pena Nieto, Justin Trudeau has met agencies mexicans to address issues relating to the rights of the person. In particular, it was question of violence against women, freedom of expression and of the risk to journalists and defenders of human rights in the course of their duties.
