The Vatican has recalled Saturday in a letter to the bishops of the rules for choosing the bread and wine for the mass, speaking out against the hosts completely gluten-free, but validating GMOS.

While for a long time, the priests were provided wine and communion wafers with religious communities, “today we find them on sale also in the supermarket, in other stores and on the internet”, is this letter from cardinal Robert Sarah, “minister” of worship and sacraments.

So, he asked the bishops to ensure “full respect” of the canonical norms on the part of the producers.

For catholics, the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ during the rite of the mass, but this transubstantiation is valid only with products that comply.

The bread should be unleavened (made without yeast) and pure wheat, made by persons who are competent and have integrity. Another cereal is tolerated only in very small proportions, while the addition of other products such as fruit, sugar or honey, is “a serious abuse”.

The wine must come exclusively from grapes and priests are invited to keep it for it not to be aigrisse not.

For people who can not absorb of bread or of wine fermented, the bishops may allow the grape must or of communion wafers low gluten content, but not 100% gluten-free, on the grounds that it misrepresents the bread.

On the other hand, the Vatican has decided that the material eucharistic prepared with genetically modified organisms could be considered to be a valid matter, ” says the mail.

To ensure the respect of these criteria, the Vatican suggests the introduction of a supervisory authority in each country.
