Since Wednesday night, all the citizens of Donnacona need to boil their water due to contamination of the municipal network in the E. coli and fecal coliforms.

The director general of the municipality, Sylvain Germain, has confirmed to the Newspaper that a water sample taken showed levels of fecal coliforms and E. coli above the standards. All citizens connected to the municipal system, therefore, must boil their water for at least one minute before consuming until further notice.

One does not have for the moment no idea of the source of contamination, has allowed Mr. Germain. Or of the time for the return to normal. It could also be a bad manipulation in the sample. “No scenario is dismissed,” said Mr. Germain.

The acceptable level of fecal coliforms is 10 cfu (coliform and faecal) per 100 ml of water and the measured level was more than 80 cfu per 100 ml of water.

Messages were sent on the social networks, on the Web site of the City and an information board has been posted at the entrance of the city to notify the citizens. Truck speaker also circulated in all the streets of Donnacona, Wednesday, to pass the message and leaflets were distributed.

Water bottles are also distributed at the municipal garage.

    7,200 homes would be affected.
