Lack of water in 2050 will increase substantially, and may touch already 5.7 billion people of the globe, reports Rus.Media.
Provided in the March 19 world report of the United Nations on the status of water resources says that at the moment, about 3.6 billion people of the Earth live in areas where at least once a month there is a shortage of water. By 2050 this figure could rise to 4.8-5.7 billion.
The annual global water consumption increased on average by 1%, and depends on the rate of population growth, economic development, water consumption and other factors, and it will continue to grow rapidly in the next 20 years. Despite the fact that agriculture is the largest consumer of water, soon the pace of industrial and domestic demand for the resource exceeds them. More growth will occur in developing States and countries with economies in transition.
UNESCO Director-General pointed to the need to find new ways of regulating the consumption of water and maintenance of water resources to prevent serious problems of water security.
However, problems have affected water quality, as water bodies are increasingly polluted.
Another problem will be flooding. According to forecasts, by 2050 they would be affected 1.6 billion people (almost 20% of the world population).
