The Danish Caroline Wozniacki has defeated the no. 1 Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-7 (3) 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the pane women’s Rogers Cup on Friday.
More than five hours elapsed between the beginning and the end of the meeting, because of the rain which fell on the Aviva Center.
Wozniacki, sixth-seeded, lost the first three games of the encounter, but she turned the tables and eventually win the first round.
In the second set, Pliskova was leveled to a set around, winning the last four points of the breaking of a deadlock.
During the final set, Wozniak broke the Czech to zero to match the account at 4-4. A fifth breakage was going to give him the victory, his first in seven games against a player ranked number 1 in the world.
Pliskova was participating in a first tournament since she became the queen of women’s tennis.
Wozniacki has spent 67 weeks at the top of the rankings in 2010 and 2011, but it has been slowed by injuries during the past two years. She has won the Rogers cup 2010 in Montreal.
This was not a good day for the Czechs, as in the conclusion of the day program the American Sloane Stephens has defeated Lucie Safarova 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.
Safarova has committed eight double faults, which helped Stephens to collect six breaks, one more than his rival.
The evening program began with Garbine Muguruza opposed to Elina Svitolina. The Spanish and Ukrainian are the fourth and fifth seeded teams.
This will then be the clash between the defending champion, Simona Halep, and the French Caroline Garcia.
