After the virus Zika, other viruses may lead to fetal malformations in pregnant women, according to an american study.
According to a study published by Science Translational Medicine, the west Nile virus and the encephalitis virus, Powassan could lead to deformities in new-born, as is the case for the virus, Zika, according to what CNN reported.
Researchers in the us have made this discovery by injecting the two viruses in pregnant mice. A week later, they discovered that the fetus affected had suffered severe damage to the brain. Half of them did not survive beyond 12 days after being exposed to the virus.
The researchers also concluded that these malformations could affect the fetal human if their mother is a carrier of the west Nile virus or encephalitis Powassan.
The two viruses that are spreading currently in North America, through bites of ticks and mosquitoes. Health Canada is warning that two viruses can have serious effects on health, especially in the elderly or already affected by disease.
